February 03, 1947 - January 17, 2026

Nanci L. Newman ( Strain )

Nanci L. Newman (Strain), age 78, of Tybee Island, Georgia, passed away on January 17, 2026.

Nanci was born on February 3, 1947, to the late Claude and Billie Jeanne Strain. She graduated from high school in Des Moines, Iowa, and continued her education at Southeast Missouri State University.

Nanci lived a life marked by curiosity, leadership, and a deep love for people. Early in her career, she worked as a flight attendant with Eastern Airlines in Atlanta before finding her true calling in journalism. She began as a news reporter, later becoming a television news reporter, and ultimately served as the trusted 6:00 p.m. news anchor for WJCL in Savannah. After her time in broadcasting, Nanci went on to run a successful advertising agency, working with prominent clients including Enmarket and Levy Jewelers.

Passionate about public service, Nanci was the first head of the Democratic Party in Chatham County and was honored to be elected as a delegate to the 1984 Democratic National Convention.

Nanci was best known for her vibrant personality and generous spirit. She loved to host a celebration—whether it was St. Patrick’s Day or the Beach Bum Parade on Tybee Island—and she never did anything halfway. Her parties were legendary, marked by thoughtful preparation, warm hospitality, and a sincere desire to make sure everyone felt welcome and had a good time.

She is survived by her sons, Cam Turner and his wife Margaret Turner, and John Newman and his wife Alice Newman; her grandchildren, Emmaline and Brooks Turner, and Brandon Oscar and Owen Newman; and many friends who became family through the years.

A private service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Hayda Perdue and the compassionate staff of Hospice Savannah for their exceptional care and kindness.
